Katheryn Langelier

Herbalist & Founder, Herbal Revolution Farm & Apothecary

Katheryn Langelier is committed to bridging the gap between food as medicine and medicine as food by creating products that are meant to be used in our everyday lives. She founded Herbal Revolution, which provides high quality herbal wellness products. Her certified organic farm in Maine is where she grows most of the herbs that go into her products. A graduate of David Winston’s two year herbal studies course, she is now is his graduate program.

How did you first discover your love of plants?

I had the great fortune of growing up in rural Maine, which meant I spent a lot of time outside. Our backyard was a place of endless exploration and wonder, with many different plants like red clover, dandelion, golden rod, wild blueberries and lady slippers, just to name a few. I can still remember the first time I ate red clover and how delicious the sweet nectar tasted, such a difference from the intense bitter flavor of dandelion latex that I would try to get my sister to try, lol. By the time I was a teenager I was familiar with the edible plants that grew in the woods around our house and in our yard, and was reading books on wild foods and herbal medicine.

Your farm and your practice are intertwined, tell us about them.

My relationship with the plants and the land is the heart and inspiration for my business. It guides me. It’s when I’m out spending time with the plants where I make decisions and tap into my intuition and creativity. Working with the land and the plants is my life practice and the business is a result of this work. Without this relationship, there would be no Herbal Revolution. The name Herbal Revolution itself is a direct inspiration of the resilience and tenacity of plants like dandelions that bust up through the sidewalks and parking lots.

You’ve studied with some notable herbalists. How have your studies with David Winston enhanced your practice?

I’ve wanted to be in David’s program for over 10 years. I was first introduced to David through his book Adaptogens: Herbs for Strength, Stamina, and Stress Relief and started attending his workshops at herbal conferences back in 2009. I think David does a great job of teaching from a place of experience, knowledge, and intuitiveness. I appreciate that he doesn’t just focus on Western herbalism and incorporates other approaches like TCM and Ayurveda.

Working with plants inspires me to create, formulate and continue learning. As the formulator for Herbal Revolution, it’s so important that I continue educating myself and David’s program has made me a better formulator, herbalist and has inspired me to start offering more educational components in my business, like our Plant of the Month subscription box.

What was your inspiration for your book Herbal Revolution?

In 2019, Page Street Publishing reached out asking if I would write an herbal recipe book for them. I love creating recipes and formulating, so I thought it would be a fun project. Working with herbs has been part of my lifestyle for over 25 years so I wanted to create an easy and approachable book that encouraged people to incorporate herbs into their daily lives. To create their own Herbal Revolution and to inspire people to more about herbs and study with a local herbalist and/or through an online program like David’s.

Do you have a favorite of David’s formulas?

I appreciate so many of David’s formulas it’s hard to just pick one, but I LOVE and regularly take the Hawthorn Solid Extract.
