Hypertension is associated with obesity, diet, stress, overuse of stimulants (coffee, tea, ephedra), excessive sodium consumption, cigarette smoking, as well as the use of contraceptive pills and familial history of heart disease. Quitting smoking, reducing sodium consumption as well as caloric intake and eliminating or reducing coffee intake are all helpful. A healthy diet low in saturated fats and refined carbohydrates and rich in soluble fiber, whole grains, legumes and dark green leafy vegetables is very helpful. Increase consumption of calcium, magnesium, Co-Q10 and essential fatty acids such as evening primrose oil, flax seed oil, and fish oils. Stress reduction techniques such as meditation, yoga and deep breathing exercises are also very useful. Flower essences may also be very helpful.

Garlic fresh or in pill form is useful, as are Du Zhong (Eucommia) tea, Cramp Bark, Chamomile or Lemon Balm. Herbal diuretics can also be effective as a symptomatic treatment of hypertension. Dandelion leaf, Stinging Nettles leaf and Water Plantain are useful and spare potassium.
