Barberry is a
common weedy shrub that has bitter tasting, bright yellow roots. The
primary constituent is the alkaloid berberine, which is an
antibacterial, a bitter tonic, a cholagogue and antifungal. The root
is used to stimulate bile secretion, increase liver function and
improve fat digestion. It is also effective as a local
antibacterial/antifungal agent for thrush, bacterial vaginosis,
vaginal candidiasis, urinary tract infections, sore throats and
sinus infections. |
