Herbalist & Alchemist Founder David Winston Honored by AHPA

Washington, NJ (April 5, 2011) – Herbalist & Alchemist founder David Winston RH (AHG) was one of the top herbal experts in the US who recently received The AHPA Herbal Insight Award from the American Herbal Products Association. This award recognizes individuals or non-commercial organizations that have a significant impact on furthering knowledge and understanding of botanicals and their uses.

The award was presented to each individual member of the AHPA Expert Advisory Council for the revision of AHPA's Botanical Safety Handbook, which provides safety data on more than 600 herbs. This team of professionals, made up of  top experts in the field of herbal medicine, voluntarily dedicated their specialized knowledge to review the current information on botanical safety, providing an invaluable service to the herbal and health care community. The revised edition of the Botanical Safety Handbook will be published in early 2012.

The revision process is based on methods outlined in “Dietary Supplements: A Framework for Evaluating Safety” published in 2005 by the Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council. This text emphasizes the importance of a transparent research process, appropriate consideration of different levels of evidence, and the use of an expert review committee.  This committee reviewed each entry, assigned safety and interaction ratings, assured that all contraindications and precautions are clinically relevant, and discussed any discrepancies in the literature.  

The Editorial Committee for the BSH revision includes some top experts in the field of herbal medicine and natural products: Zoë Gardner, PhD, team leader; Roy Upton, RH(AHG); Mary Hardy, M.D.; Aviva Jill Romm, CPM, RH(AHG); Tieraona Low Dog, MD; David Winston, RH(AHG); Michael McGuffin; Daniel Gagnon, RH(AHG); Soaring Bear, Ph.D.; Lyle Craker, Ph.D.; and David Kroll, Ph.D.
